The BioTechnical Institute of Maryland Board today announced the appointment of Dr. Brandy Carter as Executive Director.
Dr. Carter brings to the role 12 years of administrative experience in education, working for the District of Columbia Public Schools, Anne Arundel Community College, and consulting for various charter schools. More recently, Dr. Carter served as the Assistant Executive Director of Adult Education and Programs at South Baltimore Learning Center. At SBLC, Dr. Carter was an invaluable partner to BTI, providing career preparation and highly effective education remediation services to BTI students.
“We’re thrilled to have found someone with a combination of educational and workforce expertise, along with a commitment to transforming lives of under- and unemployed Baltimore residents,” said Pablo Pineyro, BTI Board President. “Dr. Carter knows BTI well and can accelerate our goals to further existing partnerships and forge new ones. The Life Sciences sector is a major driver for Maryland’s new economy; we need these skilled workers to accelerate our growth.”
Interim Director Kathleen Weiss, who led the organization out of the pandemic, said “Dr. Carter knows our students, understands what employers need, and can now continue the progress BTI made as it kept its distinctive hands on training while enhancing the unexpected benefits of combining online and remote tools.”
In her new role, Dr. Carter will continue BTI’s work, strengthening the organization as a leader in biotechnical training and establishing partnerships with corporations, research institutions, and employers, foundations, community leaders, government officials, and supporters.
“I’m thrilled to be taking the reins of BTI at this pivotal time in its history,” said Dr. Carter. “I’m most proud of my work to date helping Baltimore City residents transform their lives through education and workforce training–and BTI is perfectly situated to continue this groundbreaking work.”
Dr. Carter added that she is passionate about making sure individuals are seen and heard; her goal is to give a voice to the often voiceless and help them forge career pathways which can help build generational wealth.
Dr. Carter holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Virginia Union University, a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Capella University.
The BTI Board has expressed its deep appreciation to Kathleen Weiss who stepped in as the interim Executive Director. Ms. Weiss, who previously led BTI in its early years, will transition back to her Board of Director role as Executive Director Emerita.
