Dr. Brandy Carter, executive director of the Biotech Institute of Maryland (BTI), was one of three authors of an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun urging the Maryland General Assembly to overturn the Governor’s veto of needed funding for the Maryland Transit Administration’s public transit system.
Dr. Carter was joined by Cheri Cernak, an owner of CRC Restaurants, BWI Airport, and Terrell Williams, co-director of Turnaround Tuesday, in authoring the op-ed, which detailed the ways in which Maryland’s broken public transit system affects students, workers and others trying to get ahead.
In the op-ed, Dr. Carter noted that:
The biotech industry in Baltimore faces a shortage of skilled lab associates, and BTI knows how to train the workers they need. Yet BTI graduates have trouble getting to these well-paying jobs on time because they need safe, reliable public transit to get there. Employers can’t afford to keep employees who routinely show up late — even when it’s due to transit delays and no-shows.
